In protest against the attack by Indian citizens and the Border Security Force (BSF) on the Shibganj border in Chapainawabganj and against Delhi’s aggression, general students organized a protest march at University Of Rajshahi (RU).
On Saturday, January 18, at around 8:30 PM, students gathered at the ‘Zoha Square’ on campus. They then took out a procession, marching through various roads within the campus.
During the protest, students chanted slogans such as “Delhi or Dhaka? Dhaka Dhaka,” “Not Collaboration, But the Streets? The Streets The Streets,” “Break India’s Aggression, Smash It to Pieces,” “India’s Darkness, Break Its Hands, Smash It to Pieces,” and “Hit Modi on Both Cheeks to the Beat,” among others.
When asked about the protest, Mustafa Morshed, a student from the 2021-22 batch, said, “The torture that Indian BSF inflicts on unarmed Bangladeshi civilians is condemnable. The fascist government is directing its anger towards the common people of Bangladesh. India has started exerting dominance over us, and they are not giving us a fair share of the water from our undivided rivers. We want to make it clear that we did not break free from the chains of colonial rule to submit to Delhi’s control.”
Mehedi Sajib, one of the coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, expressed solidarity with the protesting students, saying,
“Since the July Revolution, India has been trying to destabilize Bangladesh through various tactics. That is why today, Indian forces have opened fire and thrown bombs on civilians at the border. India does not want our people to live in peace. If they do not act as a good neighbor, RU students will thwart their schemes.”
Professor Dr. Mohammad Yamin Hossain from the Fisheries Department remarked,
“On the issue of sovereignty, RU students have always been unyielding. The people of Bangladesh will never accept any of India’s conspiracies. Over the past 16 years, by collaborating with the fascist government, India has taken away much of Bangladesh’s land, resources, and more. Unable to do so anymore, they are now attacking the citizens at our borders, which is a reprehensible act.”
It is worth noting that on Saturday morning, January 18, tension arose between the citizens of both countries at the Kaliganj border in Shibganj Upazila, Chapainawabganj. Local sources from the Bangladesh border reported that BSF personnel suddenly gathered over 600 Indians near the barbed wire fence, and during this, some crossed into Bangladesh. When the news spread, Bangladeshis chased the Indians, leading to a clash between them.
